Smelt Derby 2012

Kya doing a little practicing with Dad

Ryker is an all pro caster now.  Little does he know that he won't need those skills while fishing for smelt.  He did practice his jigging though and he'll definetly need that.
Kya fell for it, hook, line, and sinker every time.

The day has finally arrived.

It was cold
They were smart
Team Chomjak's showing Ryker a geocache.  He, much like myself, did not jump on the geocache excitement wagon.  To each his own.
Fresh spot.  Will it be our honey hole?  Nada, we got skunked.

We did find a few fish.  Ryker and Kya painted fish prints at the kids area again this year and they had a great face painter.

Back to casting practice.  We'll get them, come humpy season.  No one eats smelt anyway.

So Grown Up....Me, Not the Kids

Seth and I had our first parent/teacher conference last week. Yep, you read that right.  I'm in charge of another human's development. I'm feeling pretty grown up right now. Of course, there wasn't much more to it than that. We already knew he could count to 20 with a skip or mix up in the teens, he can identify at least half his letters, he's been singing the ABC's since before he was in school, has known all his colors and shapes including crazy ones like cylinders and turquoise, and is a very rambunctious three year old learning to use his words to address conflict, frustration, and feelings, and to compromise with other 3-6 year olds. I don't know how Seth was as a boy, but I can tell you that Cam was supposed to always have one body part touching his desk in the 3rd grade. Any body part would do as long as it meant he was tethered to his desk. And Ty? Well, eight years after his brother, apparently Mr. Capp had gotten a little more resourceful and Ty was actually duct taped to his chair. You wouldn’t get away with that these days and both my brothers would probably be medicated for some hyper active disorder, but they, like Ryker now, were just balls of energy that needed a longer recess and a few more stair laps in gym class as far as I’m concerned. Thankfully Mrs. Tina recognizes, embraces, and nurtures the spirited little character that he is just as Mr. Capp did 20+ years ago.

So in a nutshell, he's a happy, healthy, bundle of energy that gets along with everyone in his class. The most important thing that his teacher has stressed to me numerous times, although she didn't say it in our conference, is that he is kind. I'm sure there will be days that he picks on other kids or is unkind, but for now he’s a sweet, gentle soul. He will be a big guy and we are doing the best we can to teach him to be compassionate and to protect and stick up for others instead of picking on them. Unfortunately, Kya is the punching dummy for most of his “lessons”, but she’ll survive…just as I did. He loves her and is great with her, but we use her a lot to show him how his actions affected her and that even when it is an accident, he needs to check on her, find out if she’s okay, get someone if she’s hurt, hug her, help her up, hold her hand while he walks her to the house…..not just say he’s sorry and run off to ride his bike while she picks the gravel out of her lip and wipes the muddy tire tracks off her back.

There is a natural tendency to be compassionate, but we sometimes don't act on those impulses.  I think teaching that at a young age is very important.  I was a nice kid and I'd consider myself to be a compassionate adult, but I remember exact turning points in my life where I learned compassion for certain things, even as an adult. I still have a long way to go and I can’t believe some of the things that I never understood until I experienced them myself. Now though, at least I know that even though I may not understand something and I can’t even fathom being in someone else's shoes, I keep a more open mind and am much more sensitive to the feelings and pain of others.  I'm able to be a much better friend and am much more comfortable having tough conversations about difficult situations where it would be my preference to avoid the situation all together.  Now, I go to the hospital, I check on people, I send the card, because it doesn't matter what you say, it's that you cared enough to take the time even though it would be easier not to.

Yay for Weekends!

Watching "Aunt Carol's Famous Carrot Cake" cook to take to Clayton's birthday party.
Whatever will we do when we are out of mustaches?

sharing days

Ryker loves sharing day at school.  Every Friday he gets to take something to show off and see what all the other kids have.  The teacher gives a suggestion, but sometimes we take something just because....like the day Ryker wanted to take his bunk beds.  We had to settle for this picture of them instead.  Then we had to take a second picture because he decided he wanted to be in the bed pretending he was sleeping.  Then a third because he wanted to have his foot sticking out from under the blanket.  I didn't end up printing that one though because he was wearing only underwear and it looked like he was showing his junk.  I handed him the picture in the morning and of course, he said "where's my foot."  I can't slip anything by him.
Favorite food day:  Cookie cutter sandwiches.  He wanted to make a heart but the next week was Valentines day and we were supposed to bring something heart shaped so he opted for the star.

Look at the paw on that kid!!!

Kya gets ready to hit the pool.

Ryker showing me his sweet wrestling moves.  I put him in a flying zerbertowski!  Pretty sure I won this match.

Ryker kept calling out who was to wrestle each other next.  He kept wanting me and Kara to wrestle and he was going to take pictures.  We finally did to satisfy him.  The last time I wrestled Kara was years ago, she'd had a few drinks and I held her down I was wrestling a calf.  From the one picture Ryker got of us, it's pretty clear that I am still undefeated!   It's not much to brag about though........
She couldn't even break free of THIS move Ryker put on her!
Ryker in the tiger head at Jungle Playland.

This ride didn't work so I guess Ryker and Kya thought they could push Alexis and her animal pals.
After Jungle Playland, we stopped at The Net so Kara could try some of the Skagit Valley's finest cuisine and headed to LaConner to watch Clayton's new boat be launched....and unlaunched.  Seems there was a little leak.  Don't worry, it's all fixed and probably out fishing as I write this.

And Bingo was his Name-O

Lucky Kara, she was here for Edison Bingo night!  I only happens once a year.

Colton and Ryker getting their Bingo strategy figured out.
Getting a little advice from Randy.

All Pro Bingo Team Captain, with 3 cards.  We were surprised she didn't show up with any of Marj's old dobbers.
Awwww, snack intermission.  It might be the best part of the evening.
We came, we played, we ate, we laughed, we chatted, and even took home some prizes.  Pretty good night.
